Noel’s Therapy Specialties:
Counseling with Adolescents and Teens
Noel has a great talent for working with adolescents and teens. As a seasoned therapist, he has many years of experience and training in working with this age group. Of course, it is developmentally normal for kids ages 12 and up to start to pull away from their parents. During adolescence, many kids want to spend more time online or with their peers. However, when this normal behavior occurs at the same time when parents are also observing their teen displaying signs of depression and anxiety, it can be quite upsetting.
Parents can often sense that something is off but teens may not want to talk to their parents about what is going on. Sometimes, a teen might feel more comfortable talking to someone objective. Noel is great at working with teens and adolescents who are difficult to engage. He can often work with them to find goals for therapy that can help teens reduce their symptoms, and also put their parents’ minds at ease.
In addition to being a licensed mental health counselor, Noel is also a CADC. When working with clients to address their recovery goals, Noel takes the time to fully assess where each client is at. This assessment allows Noel to evaluate their readiness to change behaviors. Then, Noel guides clients through the stages of change as they are ready. He takes a harm reduction approach to recovery, but can also help clients maintain abstinence if that is their choice. Noel uses multiple techniques as a recovery counselor. These include, CBT and Mindfulness techniques to help teach coping and life skills, identify internal/external triggers, develop positive social support, and maintain motivation for change.
As a trauma specialist, Noel can provide trauma therapy and PTSD treatment here in North Riverside and beyond. Noel is trained in EMDR, a therapeutic technique used to help people who experienced trauma. EMDR includes:
- Learning to identify negative beliefs
- Identifying specific memories where the negative beliefs were held true by the client
- Developing adaptive beliefs is an important part of processing with EMDR.
During EMDR, we focus on what is happening with the body when a person is triggered and find ways to self-soothe. It is crucial to teach clients self-stabilization techniques to help cope with the stressors or negative emotions that may arise from processing these thoughts. Eventually, by desensitizing triggers, clients get to the point where things that used to be overwhelming do not bother them so much anymore. Clients can get out of the cycle of avoiding stressors and get their lives back.
Counseling for Men’s Issues
Mental health treatment for men is often especially stigmatized. And, this occurs throughout different cultures. Noel understands the need to provide men with an outlet to discuss their feelings. Then, he will help them learn coping skills instead of putting pressure on them to figure everything out for themselves. Noel understands the need to give men the opportunity to be vulnerable, to ask for help, and to recognize these behaviors are not signs of weakness. The truth is that men’s mental health is very important. When we help men heal, we help families heal as well.
