How Teen Therapy Works at Shift Counseling

Our qualified teen therapists understand the delicate balance between providing support and fostering independence. We create a safe, non-judgmental space where teenagers feel heard, understood, and empowered to make positive changes.

What to Expect:

We offer both in-person appointments and secure virtual sessions throughout Illinois. Sessions are typically weekly and last 50-60 minutes. The initial session focuses on building rapport and understanding your teenager's concerns.

The therapist will also explain confidentiality rules and what to expect from the therapeutic process. Parents are often included for part of the first session, though the teen will also have private time with the therapist to build trust and autonomy.

Is Teen Therapy Right for Your Family?

Teen therapy can be helpful even without a formal diagnosis. Many families reach out because their teen seems withdrawn or struggling where they used to thrive.

Many teens are hesitant about therapy at first — that's completely normal. We recommend trying at least 3 sessions to allow your teen time to build trust.

If you're unsure whether teen therapy is the right next step, we offer a free consultation where we can discuss what your teen is going through and answer your questions about the process.

Teen therapy might be right for your family if:

  • Your teen is struggling emotionally, academically, or socially

  • Communication at home has become difficult

  • Your teen has experienced trauma, loss, or a major life change

  • You've noticed changes in sleep, appetite, grades, or friendships

  • Your teen wants to talk to someone outside the family

  • You want to give your teen tools before problems grow

Getting Started with Teen Therapy

  • Request a Free Consultation

Schedule a brief 15-minute phone or video call with one of our teen therapy specialists. This gives you a chance to share what's going on, ask questions about how therapy works, and see if we're a good fit. No pressure, no commitment.

  • Schedule Teen's First Session

If we're a match, we'll schedule your teen's first appointment. Choose between in-person sessions at our North Riverside office or virtual sessions from home. If you're already confident we're the right fit, you can skip the consultation and book directly.

  • Begin the Journey

In the first session, your teen's therapist will get to know them, discuss what's bringing them to therapy, and start building a treatment plan together. We'll also talk with you about confidentiality and how we'll keep you updated while respecting your teen's privacy.

FAQs

  • The length of teen therapy varies based on what your teen is working on and their individual progress. Some teens feel significantly better within 8-12 sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support, especially if they're dealing with complex issues like trauma or chronic mental health challenges. In the first few sessions, your teen's therapist will discuss realistic timelines and goals. Many teens notice improvements in mood, coping skills, and confidence within the first month.

  • Be honest and straightforward. Let them know that therapy is a space where they can talk about what's going on in their life with someone who's trained to help and who won't judge them. Emphasize that therapy is for them, it's not about getting them to behave a certain way or fixing them. If they're nervous, reassure them that the first session is mostly just getting to know each other and that they won't be forced to talk about anything they're not ready to discuss. You can also let them know that if they don't connect with their therapist after a few sessions, they can request to work with someone else. Therapy only works when there's a good fit.

  • All of our teen therapists are licensed mental health professionals (Licensed Professional Counselors, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists) with specific training and experience working with adolescents. They use evidence-based practices and have strong expertise in teen development, family systems, and the unique challenges facing today's teenagers. Beyond credentials, our therapists genuinely connect well with young people and create environments where teens feel comfortable opening up.

  • Sessions typically range from $75 to $200 without insurance coverage, but with in network coverage, you may only be responsible for a copay of $10-$50 per session. Shift Counseling is in-network with BCBS PPO, Aetna, Cigna/Evernorth, and Lyra. Out-of-pocket costs vary widely based on your policy, but we can give you an estimate of your benefits if you call to schedule an initial appointment. Many insurance plans significantly reduce out-of-pocket costs depending on your mental health coverage.

  • Motivational interviewing is a collaborative, person-centered counseling approach that's particularly effective with resistant or hesitant teenagers. Rather than confronting resistance directly or trying to convince teens why they should change, this technique helps adolescents explore their own ambivalence about change and discover their personal motivations for growth. Through skillful use of open-ended questions, reflective listening, and affirmations, therapists help teens verbalize their own reasons for considering change and discover discrepancies between their current behaviors and their stated values or goals. This approach is powerful with teenagers because it honors their developmental need for autonomy while gently encouraging self-reflection and personal responsibility.

  • Resistant teen counseling is common, and our therapists are skilled at working with reluctant adolescents. Start by having an open, non-judgmental conversation with your teen about your concerns and why you think therapy could help. Involve your teen in selecting a therapist and allow them some choice in the process. Many of our teen therapists offer a consultation first session with no commitment. If your teen attends even reluctantly, our skilled therapists use motivational interviewing and other engagement techniques to help teens find their own reasons for participating. We recommend trying at least 3 sessions to give therapy a fair chance before deciding it's not the right fit.

  • Confidentiality in teenage counseling is more complex than with adults because minors have different privacy rights. Generally, teen therapists maintain confidentiality about session content to build trust with adolescents, sharing only general progress updates with parents. However, therapists are legally required to break confidentiality if a teen is at risk of harming themselves or others, or if abuse is disclosed. Your adolescent counselor will explain their specific confidentiality policies during the first session so everyone understands the boundaries.

  • The level of parent involvement in teenage counseling depends on several factors including the teen's age, presenting issues, and therapeutic goals. Most teen therapists work primarily with the adolescent individually to respect their growing autonomy and maintain therapeutic trust. However, periodic parent sessions or family therapy components are often beneficial for addressing family dynamics, improving communication, and ensuring parents understand how to support their teen's progress. Your adolescent counselor will discuss the best approach for your specific situation.

  • Yes. Teen therapy using evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and trauma-focused interventions has been extensively researched and proven effective for treating depression, anxiety disorders, trauma, and other mental health challenges in adolescents. Our therapists are specifically trained in these evidence-based approaches and have significant experience helping teens with serious mental health concerns. While every teen's journey is unique, most adolescents experience meaningful improvement when they engage in therapy with a trained specialist who understands their developmental needs.

  • Teen therapy differs from adult therapy in several important ways. Adolescent counselors use developmentally appropriate language and interventions that match teenage cognitive and emotional capacities. Sessions may incorporate more active or creative approaches beyond traditional talk therapy. Teen therapists are specially trained in adolescent brain development, identity formation, and the unique social pressures facing teenagers. They also navigate unique ethical considerations around confidentiality with minors and often coordinate care with parents, schools, and other support systems in the teen's life.

  • We offer both in-person teen therapy at our North Riverside office and secure virtual sessions for clients throughout Illinois. The quality of care is the same regardless of format, so it's really about what works best for your teen and your family's schedule. Our North Riverside office is a 15-minute drive or less from Broadview, Brookfield, Westchester, Forest Park, La Grange Park, Berwyn, and parts of Chicago.

  • Item descriptionWe thoughtfully incorporate technology when it's helpful, such as apps for mood tracking, mindfulness practice, or skill building between sessions. This is always done with appropriate boundaries and privacy protections. Technology integration is used as a supplement to therapy, not a replacement for the therapeutic relationship.

  • We see clients by appointment only. Please provide at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Missed sessions without 24-hour notice are subject to a $50 fee.
